Oak Hardwood Floors 1920's Cape Cod

If your thinking about getting into the business let me give you a couple pieces of advise.  We do a lot of hardwood floor refinishing in Minneapolis so I’ve been around the block a few times.  First, floor sanding can be a very good business.  There are a lot of houses that have hardwood floors. Most houses built between 1900-1960 will have some type of hardwood, either oak or maple floors. So you should have a lot of potential customers.  Second, its a hard trade to do well because it requires a lot of physical labor.  This is good because it keeps competition out of the market and only the strong will survive.  If you’re thinking about getting into the business, then you got to be prepared to really work hard.  Third, its a rewarding job and it feels good when you see the difference you can make on a house.  Most of the floors you will work on will be in very bad shape.  The house is run down and it looks like crap.  But after your done the floors will look so much better, sometimes perfect and it will transform a house.  Plus, you get to see the result in just a couple of days.  The downside is it is a lot of physical labor.  You have to carry a lot of heavy equipment in and out the house and into your truck, plus your machines will break down and you’ll have to bring them into the shop to get fixed.  Be ready physically, you will be exhausted at the end of most days.  Also, it is a really dusty job.  You have to be prepared to get dirty everyday.  Your truck will become a dirty work truck and your clothes will become dirty work clothes.  I’ve learned its best to have a work truck and a leisure car and clothes.  You got to separate the two  otherwise your life will become engulfed in floor dust.  Lastly, applying the finish stinks.  It smells like oil base paint.  You get the poly on your clothes and hands, and you get sick of the smell.  Its good to take a few days off every couple months just to relax.  You will meet a lot of interesting people and really learn a lot about them.  I think having customers is a great experience.  You really learn how to work with people well.  If you are thinking about hardwood floor refinishing in Chicago, give me a call and I can give you some pointers.  Thanks.
